The temporarty pet evacuation center currently housed at the NDSU Research Center (5400 South Broadway, Minot ND) will be closing on August 31, 2011.
The
center was opened at the request of the Emergency Operations Center in response
to the flood emergency. At it’s
peak, the temporary shelter housed over 500 flood displaced animals.
The shelter was designed to be temporary, emergency housing for the flood
displaced animals with the goals of allowing owners time to formulate a more
permanent pet care plan. Souris
Valley Animal Shelter staff and volunteers are in the process of contacting pet
owners in order to assist in transitioning from the temporary shelter to a more
permanent arrangement for pet care.
If you have a pet at the shelter and have not been
contacted, please stop by the shelter between 8:00 am and 7:00 pm and speak with
a SVAS staff member to inform them of your intentions.
If you have been displaced out of the area, you may
contact the flood information line at (701) 858-9366 to leave a message and a
SVAS staff member will return your call.
Area
residents who would be willing to temporarily foster a flood evacuated pet are
asked to contact the flood information line where you can leave brief
information. Again, a SVAS staff
member will call you back with further questions or information.
In both these instances, the flood line operators are merely taking
messages and may not be able to answer your questions.
Arrangements are being made with local and national organizations to house and
place for adoption pets that are unable to be re-united with their families.
The temporary shelter will continue it’s normal operations until August
31, 2011. Any animals unclaimed at
that time will be considered abandoned and will be placed for adoption.
All pet owners are urged to stop at the temporary
pet evacuation center to inform the staff of their intentions and to make plans
for permanently re-uniting with their pets.
