SVHS Newsletter 1

A WORD FROM OUR BOARD

VICE PRESIDENT JANICE SWEENEY

The shelter has undergone many changes in the last few months. If you have not been there for a while, please stop in and take a look!  The lobby, office, and visitation rooms have been given a facelift with paint, stenciling, furniture, and photographs.  We will soon be having a grand opening of the cat socializing room. Thank you to all the people who donated their time and money to make this happen.
We are looking forward to “An Evening to Paws,” our Gala Fundraiser. It will be held at the Grand International Inn on April 28 at 6 p.m.  We have many wonderful items for the silent and live auctions from many generous donors. There is something for everyone – adventure, items for the home, sports, dining out – be sure to check out our website at www.svhspets.com for more information. We hope to see you there!
We would like to ask all area artists to help us create a new logo. You can mail or drop off your logo creation at the shelter by August 1, 2007. More details can be found on our website or by calling the shelter.
It is so important for everyone to help the animals that are unwanted or abandoned. Please help us accomplish this by becoming a member of SVHS, donating time or money to the shelter, and having your pets spayed or neutered.

Money Corner

In an effort to keep the community informed on our fundraising or grant activities, each newsletter will list a recap of the quarterly events. Note: the fundraising list is not a complete list of the past quarter’s fundraisers only our top money makers. If you have any questions on either list, please give the business office a call @ 839-6116.

Grants:
The Souris Valley Humane Society received a $1,245 grant from Verendrye Electric “Operation Roundup”. The funds paid off the remaining balance on an air to air exchanger which will greatly improve the air quality and therefore, the health of our sheltered animals and a much needed freezer.

A BIG THUMBS UP TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED AND SUPPORTED OUR FUNDRAISERS THIS QUARTER!

ASK O’CYRUS

Dear O’Cyrus, I hear so much about the benefits of micro chipping your pets. Can you tell me why it’s so important??
Thanks!  Mandy from Logan, ND

Hi Mandy!  Nothing is harder on a pet owner then losing their beloved pet. If your pet becomes lost, a micro chip will provide valuable information about the owner. Many law enforcement agencies, veterinary clinics and humane societies have equipment to scan stray animals in the hopes of finding the owners. Micro chipping is a simple procedure, a shot inserts the chip the size of a grain of rice, and all the information is registered with a national database. Call the Souris Valley Humane Society at 852-6133 for more information on micro chipping your pet today!!

Dear O’Cyrus, I hear you have a big gala coming up on April 28.  Can you tell me why we should attend? Thanks! Joe Member from

Minot, ND

Hi Joe!! This gala has the potential of being our biggest fundraiser in our history!! Not only will you have a delicious buffet supper but you’ll have the opportunity to bid on many wonderful auction items.

We have items for everyone from round trip tickets to Las Vegas, restaurant certificates, hotel stays, crushed asphalt and top soil!! The proceeds will care for the many animals that come through our doors, upwards of 50+ each and every month!! Set aside April 28 to enjoy an evening of food, fun and friendship. Tickets are $25 each.  If you’d like more information or to reserve tickets, call Susan at 839-6770 soon!! Hope to see you and many other pet lovers there!!!

VOLUNTEER CORNER

Dakota Boys & Girls Ranch Residents

Last June, I had the pleasure of conducting a Volunteer Orientation at the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch. We discussed the various volunteer opportunities that the residents could be involved in such as walking dogs and socializing cats. A number of the residents were interested in volunteering and signed up and a schedule was discussed.

Since June, almost every Saturday, at least 4 residents along with their staff have come to the shelter. They spend time walking dogs, giving nearly every dog at least a short walk or time in the play yard. Some choose to bring cats into the adoption rooms for play time.  On some occasions we’ve asked the residents for help with projects we had going on such as photographing the pets for our website and they’ve been more then willing to help us out.

They are always respectful and follow all rules that were discussed during the orientation. It has been a pleasure to have these residents on our team. Not only do we appreciate them, the animals do as well.

New Volunteer Orientations take place every Saturday at Noon. Stop by the shelter and pick up an application and bring it to orientation. An application can also be accessed on our website:

WHAT IF YOU WITNESS ANIMAL ABUSE, NEGLECT, ABANDONMENT OR MISTREATMENT

We receive numerous phone calls concerning animal abuse, animal neglect, animal abandonment, or animal mistreatment. And as much as the Souris Valley Humane Society would love to handle or investigate these cases we do not have legal jurisdiction within the state of North Dakota. The Souris Valley Humane Society provides shelter, food, water and care for animals that are surrendered, abandoned, neglected but we are nothing more than a depository. However, there are actions that the general public can and must take to prevent and/or stop unjustifiable neglect. It is our responsibility to stand up for the rights of animals. Please take a moment to read and familiarize yourself with the statutes concerning the Inhumane Treatment of Animals. *“Any sheriff, police officer, licensed veterinarian, or investigator may take custody of and care for any animal unjustifiably exposed to cold or inclement weather or not properly fed and watered. Any sheriff or police officer may use reasonable means to enter a motor vehicle and remove an animal that has been left in the vehicle. A sheriff, police officer, licensed veterinarian, or investigator may care for the animal until it is redeemed by the owner or authorized agent of the owner and when necessary may deliver the animal to another person or facility to be sheltered, cared for, and furnished suitable food and drink.”

We all have a moral obligation to take care of the animals under our care--so act and act quickly AND make sure the proper authority acts on your complaint! Remember this, just because the call is made doesn’t mean something will be done—follow-up, follow-up, follow-up!!!!!!!

(continued from page 1 … “An Evening to Paws” Gala)

Please join us at our biggest fundraiser in our 29-year history! Are you undecided … have no time …? Our “Top Ten” reasons will convince you otherwise …

10.  You can eat, drink and be merry; share stories and pictures of your special 4-legged furry friends while debating the best method to remove pet hair.

9. You can buy gourmet treats and pass them off as your own.

8.  You can check out hundreds of items and have fun one-upping your buddies in a bidding war.

7. You can obtain a large gift basket of assorted goodies just in time for Mother's Day.

6.  You have an excellent chance of winning a brand new John Deere Tractor (size not specified).

5. You can own autographed memorabilia from Minnesota Vikings’ Kevin Williams or NASCAR’s Tony Stewart.

4. You can proudly say that you were at the greatest auction EVER … while others regret missing it.

3.  Where else can you get a chance to fly to Las Vegas for the weekend, spend a relaxing day at a local spa getting "The Works", enjoy a private wine-tasting party at a local winery, learn to golf with one of the Country Clubs pros, join the Minot Police Department on a Ride-Along (Saturday nights will never be the same), or have live lobsters flown in overnight, fresh from a lobster boat in Maine?  And that's just a small sample of the great auction items available.

2.  If you don't go, your absented-minded neighbor might win Earthmover's 6 loads of crushed asphalt and have it accidentally dumped on your painstakingly manicured lawn.

But our #1 reason for wanting you at the Grand International, April 28th...

1. Because hundreds of our furry friends both want and need you to be a part of this event…you can't beat the wonderful feeling knowing that you've made a difference in the lives of so many homeless animals. Can you “Help Us … Help Them?”

Visit our www.svhspets.com for a list of our auction items.
