Warm Weather Pet Care Tips

  • Be alert to signs of heat stress, such as heavy panting, rapid pulse, unsteadiness
or a deep red or purple tongue.

  • If a pet becomes overheated, immerse him/her fully in cool water (not cold). Also,
let your pet drink small amounts of cool water, and let him/her lick ice cubes. Take
your pet to the veterinarian right away.
  • Dogs’ paws are sensitive; so do not walk them on hot pavement. You can place
“dog booties” on their paws to provide protection if they must walk on hot cement.
  • Never leave your pets in a car during hot weather. Temperatures in a vehicle can
reach above 120 degrees in a matter of minutes.
  • Keep a cool, dry shelter for your outdoor pets. Provide them with fresh food and
     water each day.
  • Check your pets regularly for fleas and ticks during warm weather months.
  • Make sure your pet has an identification and license tag so that he/she will be
safely returned to you if he/she gets loose.
